The manufacturer Franz Sauerbier is a diligent pioneer with big ambitions. He founds his company Franz Sauerbier and initially manufactures hay and manure forks. But soon, spiral springs become the specialty of the successful company. In 1906, he acquires the buildings at Forster Straße 5 and 6 and builds a modern manufacturing plant in the backyard. Franz Sauerbier also supports those who have had less luck than himself: he is socially engaged for many years as a community orphan councilor and repeatedly participates in poverty relief efforts. Until 1991, the Franz Sauerbier company is based at Forster Straße. Then it moves to the Neukölln district, where it still manufactures its globally sought-after spiral springs to this day.
LOCATION
In September 2020, GSG Berlin acquired the commercial courtyard at Forster Straße 5. The courtyard building with its ornate red brick facade is another highlight in the GSG portfolio. The former factory impresses young, creative companies with bright rooms and high ceilings, a friendly work atmosphere, and plenty of room for individual design. The historic elevator is also a standout feature, perfectly adding to the building’s authentic character.
